Dr Inke Schreiber

Clinical Psychologist

I am Inke, a qualified clinical psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist with an interest in understanding emotional distress in the context of past and current life events and experiences in relationships. I understand distress as inter- and intrapersonal conflicts. Therapy can provide a space for these conflicts and their impacts to be explored, understood and, hopefully, let go of. I believe that the stories we create about ourselves and the sociocultural and political context we live in are important in making sense of distress; therefore, conversations about the external realities of patients’ lives also form part of her work – the aim of this is to help patients explore their autonomy, and where they can have an impact on their lives, as well as the limitations to this.

About Me and the therapy i offer

I am a BPC accredited psychodynamic psychotherapist and HCPC registered clinical psychologist. My work is psychodynamic and therefore focuses on how experiences of relationships and life events impact on how people experience themselves in the here and now. In her therapy work, I draws on the relationship between my patient and I to develop a joint understanding of the challenges they experience. This allows for conflicts and difficulties to be openly and transparently named and explored.

I have over 10 years of experience working in a range of NHS settings and with people of all ages. Since 2021, I have also practised privately.

Working with patients from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, I am interested in how social inequalities/class, gender, race and disability link to how mental distress develops and is maintained.

I was the lead clinical psychologist in an assertive outreach team in the NHS in London. I worked with people who experience homelessness, trauma and substance use often resulting in mental distress. I am currently the clinical lead of a complex emotional needs team supporting patients who have experienced trauma and struggle to find a place within their community.

My main interest is in the impact of shifting a person’s understanding and experience of themselves. As a result of this, people often find they have more space in their mind to respond to life challenges differently.

I value honesty, curiosity and compassion in my work with the aim of coming to a joint understanding with my patients of what brings them to therapy. Emotional struggles can arise in an attempt to cope with and manage life circumstances – the complexities of these deserve a space to be heard.
